Well, I haven't much time to blog today. Roommate Laughter found a guy online and asked me to accompany her to their first in-person meeting, so we're down here in Natural Bridge Park, formerly surveyed by George Washington, owned by Thomas Jefferson, and toured by officers and enlisted men on both sides of the Civil War. They say you can see a bit of graffiti left by the eighteen-year-old who would become "first in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen," but I couldn't find it.
After three hundred years of erosion, my guess is it's not that visible.
Anyway, the bridge was shockingly impressive, taller than the Niagara Falls, and quite peaceful. Granted the weather alternated between over 100 degrees and pouring rain, so that probably had a lot to do with why the other tourists stayed away. Me? I thought the rain was awesome.
About a half mile up the trail from the bridge are the Lace Waterfalls. Obviously, I walked out to see them. As it happened, I met my roommate and the guy there, done with their touring and looking for me, so we took pictures together.
It's a weird experience, playing third wheel for people who know a lot about each other, but haven't met yet.
We left to get dinner, then came back for a light show that evening where they shone different colored lights at the bridge and played classical music to dramatize a reading of Genesis 1. It was... okay, I guess. I would have been happier watching a meteor shower or even just a plain old night sky, but there were clouds, so that wasn't an option anyway.
Anyway, park was gorgeous and worthwhile, although I'm not sure about the light show.
