Best Laid Plans

I was really hoping that today's post would be that we found a new roommate to replace the girl who moved to Maryland after she got a new job with a huge raise. It fell through at the last minute.

When the new girl came to interview and look at the house, she'd mentioned that she looked at nine other houses already, but she talked as if she had definitely decided to take this room before she even looked at it. And we wound up on some really weighty topics that don't typically come out in a first meeting regardless of what type of first meeting it is. So, while disappointing, it's not surprising. And, after the first blush of disappointment, I'm kinda relieved; the contrasting extremes were a little unsettling.

Of course, with only six days to go before rent is due, it is beginning to seem unlikely that we'll find a replacement before September. I'm guessing this means I'll be canceling my December trip, which is okay. I wasn't so sure about traveling so soon after my tour of the West.

The truly rough part is that my car can't handle much of anything, but I'm very reluctant to deal with car payments. I have to make that decision in September; with state inspection due, there's no getting around it. I still like the idea of getting a minivan and kayak, but I also dislike the idea of driving a minivan to work or to college. The gas mileage would be a killer.

Traveling Clear suggested some kind of rig that would allow me to lift a kayak to the roof of a smaller car. I think I'll stop at Dick's Sporting Goods and find out what they've got. Pretty sure most men don't have this problem, which means married/dating/cohabitating straight women don't have this problem either. Sigh... it would help if I were six inches taller.

One might also like to remind one's self that a kayak that was impossibly heavy back in May when I hadn't been working out every week might not seem as impossible to handle now.

In any case, the difference between a 2014 Corolla and a 2014 Town and Country is seven grand on the base price, not counting interest, gas, and taxes. It will be cheaper to continue renting kayaks and hotels both.

Roommate Laughter found two couches that we're going to go pick up tomorrow, and then I run to Leesburg to watch a friend sing. I'll probably arrive just as whoever's opening finishes, which sounds good to me. In the meantime, I got new paintings for the living room.

It's a sunrise.
